Experimental
and teaching uses
The composition of the tows varies
seasonally. Usually, they contain protozoans, bacteria, larval forms,
copepods, medusae, zooplankton, and phytoplankton. Supplied in quantities
obtained in a thirty-minute tow.
Phototropism
in Marine Plankton. Some
species of plankton are positively phototrophic while others exhibit
a negative response. This phenomenon can be illustrated by covering
a jar of plankton with black card stock, leaving a slit where the
ends meet. Some species will be attracted to a light placed at the
slit while others will not. Examination of each group of organisms
should be made by taking samples from light and dark areas.
Seasonal changes in
Plankton Composition. Plankton
tows will be made at the same site at specified intervals
Advanced Research on
Plankton. Plankton and data collection
will be made for researchers requiring the use of advanced equipment
and techniques. Researchers requiring such assistance should write,
supplying details of their project.
